a fun pact vaudeville from marginalized artists. May Day Gayities are
coordinated by Robin Hood and his merry gang of clowns performed Smitty
Amabilis, Jack StockLynn (Imago, Pelu'
Theatre and the COG Acrobats), Tera Zarra (Imago,
Do Jump!, Pelu' Theatre, Circus Artemis, Stefanefit) and Charity
McKee (the Portland Opera,New York at
the French Woods Festival, Ma’at Productions). Additional performances
by Carlos Alexis Cruz: (Del
Arte Graduate; Imago, Milagro, Do Jump!, Pelu Theatre)
and Shireen Press (Flameboyant

May Day occurs on May 1.
In many countries, it is synonymous with International Workers'
Day, or Labour Day, a day of political demonstrations and celebrations
organized by the unions, anarchist, and socialist groups. May Day is
also a traditional holiday in many cultures. May Day marks the end of
the uncomfortable winter half of the year in the Northern hemisphere,
and it has traditionally been an occasion for popular and often raucous
celebrations, regardless of the locally prevalent political or religious
establishment.

An important part of the late medieval and early modern
May Day festivities were "Robin Hood games"
or plays. It is commonly stated as fact that Maid Marian and a jolly
friar (at least partly identifiable with Friar Tuck) entered the legend
through the May Games. It wasn't until the 1880s that the fight for
the eight-hour work day began which we now celebrate as International
Workers' Day. Although most artists don't enjoy this luxury as they
work all day as teachers, doing marketing, and then several hours of
training and rehearsal every day to perform yet most still live a hand
to mouth existence. CoG is the Polemic to the inequity that states that
only people of privilege can be professional artists and Queers
Heart Geeks is one of the answers as a circus/ vaudeville night for
the marginalized performer.

May Day, we commemorate the struggle of working
people and the poor around the world for economic justice. We stand
together as workers, as artists. Fighting for our future. We say
the proletariat can be an artist. We are the living examples to prove
it. We aim to stop discrimination based on sexual orientation
and gender identity. Through solidarity we will reform our economic
systems to meet human needs. We demand an increase in public spending,
not more cuts to arts and social services. We demand living wage jobs,
full employment, the right and ability to self organize. We demand respect
for the hours upon hours we have spent learning our crafts.

We can achieve these goals by taxing the rich and corporations
instead of bailing them out. We can stop free trade agreements that
have outsourced jobs and kept wages low here while creating sweatshops
and destroying resources elsewhere. We can make crafts here in the United
States instead of a factory in a starving country. We can be environmentalists
and advocates for Social Justice. Solidarity Forever. Si se puede.
We are Robin Hood!

More about the Performers:

Collective of Geniuses: Acrobats

CoG performs their enthusiastic partner acro-drag act
at events all over Portland! CoG's exuberance and athleticism have stunned
audiences at such events as the E-room Pride event, Siren Nation at
Plan B, the Gender (free) for all March, and coming soon at SuperQueer
with Jennifer Lanier. The CoG Acrobats train with Sports Acrobatics
guru Stefan Furst, and is currently choreographed by Smitty Amabilis
and Jack StockLynn but moving into more ensemble based choreography.

Jack StockLynn: Clown/ Acrobat/
Aerialist/ Actor

Jack is a Portland based Clown, Acrobat, Aerialist, and
Actor. Jack performs as the forlorn clown spaceman
jack and with the Collective of Geniuses Acrobats. With CoG,
Jack also co-wrote and co-produced Denial of
Self at the IFCC. Jack was a mafioso in Imago's Apis,
and will be performing with them again for the Cuban
Missile Tango. Ze also played a stilt-walking bad guy in Suicide
Note from a Cockroach. Jack trains and teaches at DoJump! Extremely
Physical Theatre and holds a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts.

Smitty Amabilis: Acrobat/ Puppeteer

Smitty first performed in High School Drama Club but focused on visual
arts in college and beyond until the love of all things puppet, circus
and acrobatic overpowered Smitty's life. Smitty was awarded a RACC Professional
Grant to travel to Atlanta Georgia and attend the National Puppetry
Convention. Smitty loves to throw people around in the air and be silly.
Smitty is also currently working a a costume puppet animated short filmed
in the Pacific Northwest Old Growth and an ongoing documentary about
Queer Arts in Portland.

Tera Nova Zarra: Acrobat/ Aerialist/
Soprano

Tera Nova Zarra is an Imago Theatre Associate Company Member, and has
performed with Do Jump, Circus Artemis, Teatro Milagro, Clowns Without
Borders, Wanderlust Circus, and Troma. Tera is a trained opera singer,
the front woman for ninja band Fist of Dishonor, and a teacher at The
Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls. Tera Nova Zarra co-created and performed
as Missy Jitsu in Fist of Dishonor. She appeared in La Carpa del Maestro
at The Miracle Theatre, Do Jump's 30th Anniversary, Clowns Without Borders
benefits (2007-2008,) Anneyong as The Revenger, and a live presentation
of Troma's Make Your Own Damn Movie as a wrestling Toxie. Tera studies
singing at Eugene Lewis Studio, tracks vocals for Dig Recording, and
teaches at Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls.

Kyoko Uchida: Acrobat/ Aerialist/
Hand Balancer

Kyoko is naturally born to be pretty short from Japan. She studied dance
with Darryl Thomas and Valerie Baughman directors of Rainbow Dance Theatre.
She studied circus skills specializing in aerial fabric, partner acrobatics
with Jacob Skeffington from Cirque du Soleil. Currently she is trying
to be an extremely funny hand balancer. She also trained with hard core
Russian coach Yuri Bozyan as well as performed with el Viento y la Tierra
and el Dia de Sol in Barcelona Spain, Sala Roja in Montreal Canada and
Wonderbolt Circus in Newfoundland Canada. Her performances have
been numerous in the Northwest including: Wanderlust Circus, the Clowns
without Borders Benefit and in A Suicide Note from a Cockroach.

Carlos Alexis Cruz: Clown/ Acrobat/
Aerial Straps

Carlos is a professional
actor performing in Puerto Rico, Northern California and Portland, and
touring shows from New York City to Los Angeles and beyond. Locally
he has performed with Do Jump! Theatre, Imago, and Teatro Milagro. As
a theatre director, he did the Miracle’s last touring production,
El Ultimo and most recently he did a one-act version of his own show
A Suicide Note from a Cockroach… at Imago. In 2004 his work was highlighted
by the Theatre Critics of Puerto Rico for his performance in ĺconos
de Vellonera, pointing him out as the only contender for the Best Young
Actor recognition. Carlos Alexis has an MFA degree in Ensemble Based
Physical Theatre from the Dell’Arte International School in California.
He has a BA degree in film studies from the School of Communication
at the University of Puerto Rico. He has trained Circus Arts at the
San Francisco Circus Center.

Shireen Press: Fire
Dancer/Aerialist/Acrobat

Shireen has pursued her lifelong interest in movement arts through training
in yoga, dance, circus arts and aerial dance. She has been dancing with
fire since 1999, and is known for her fluid style, innovative movements
and mesmerizing performances. Shireen also performs on stilts, in the
air and balancing on her friends. An accomplished teacher as well as
performer, she has taught poi spinning, fire skills and safety to students
of all ages from the Portland Saturday Market to the beaches of India
to the National Circus School in Cambodia. She currently teaches private
circus lessons and manufactures equipment from her home in southeast
Portland. She was recently seen in the Clowns Without Borders Benefit
and the Stephanefit.

Johnny O: Drag

Johnny O was a member of the San Diego Kings Club Review from 2000 to
2004. He's a Portland Ember's Hall of Famer, and he is San Diego's Mr.
Closet Ball 2001. He has performed with troupes including DKPDX, the
Denver Alter Boys, & the Vancouver Lips Cabaret. From Palm Springs
Pride, San Diego Pride and up the coast to the Pacific Northwest, Johnny
O has his Pride on. Additionally, Johnny has been a drummer for 18 years
and is in a current project with the working name- Jim Strange with
the Proud and the Damned. This offers some depth for Johnny O, giving
him the opportunity to drum in drag for Pride Northwest and for Portland's
Egyptian Room.

Stephanie Boston: Fire-Dancer/Aerialist/Acrobat

Stephanie Boston aka “Nikita”, is a kick ass fire-dancer.
Stephanie performs regularly for many Portland area clubs such as Dante's
and Devil's Point doing fire and trapeze. Past event performances include
Convergence for Climate Action, Rockin It Bionic Benefit, and the Benefit
for the Trans and Women's Action Camp. Stephanie also performs partner
acrobatics and is learning Aerial silks/tissue and stilt acrobatics.
Currently Stephanie is choreographing a partner trapeze routine and
an aerial silk routine.

Charity McKee: Singer/Aerial silks

Charity competed in state operatic solo competitions and performed in
Oregon Oktoberfests. Her first large stage productions were Saturday’s
Warrior and a production of Handel’s Messiah. She is now a west coast
regional musician including the Portland Opera’s Carmina Burana and
Pagliacci, Oregon Cable Access with Obby Addy in Kukrudu and Okrapong,
The Crystal Ball Room, the African Arts Foundations Homowo Festival
and Mississippi Studios. Her first album Table Mirrors featuring the
rock opera Persephone was released May 2005 and The Red Cabinet Confessionals
released June 3rd, 2006. She can be heard on local radio FM broadcasts
such as 90.7 FM KBOO in Portland, Oregon and has appeared on KMUN 91.9
FM in Astoria, Oregon. In July and August 2007 she was featured in full
spreads in editions of JCT Magazine and featured on their radio station
92.G in Connecticut. She currently attends Marylhurst University.
Previously singing with St. Ignatious in their quartet in Portland,
Oregon, she has sung irregularly with Hurricane Hole and shared the
stage with artists such as Mel Watson of Fruit and also is continuing
her classic studies in the acrobatic and cirque arts with her focus
in trapeze and the aerial tissue. Her first combined recital was this
past March singing opera and jazz while dancing on the aerial chiffon.
This summer after having a successful debut on the aerial silks she
taught and performed opera, musical theatre and cirque in New York at
the French Woods Festival.

Performers for the May Day Edition of Queers Heart Geeks: for this cabaret already has some great acts but we are currently looking for people who want to work ensemble style on some pieces. Also if you have an act that is directly related to May Day or Beltaine we might be able to find some room in the line up for you. Bring your piece for the show or just a piece to show us your work to the auditions. Auditions will be April 6th from 6-8pm. Email us to sign up for an audition slot.

Social Justice League Workshop! This Saturday April 3rd from 3-6pm we will be hosting our first interactive social justice workshop: class and privilege. We will be exploring class and privilege through facilitated discussion, games, and theatre of the oppressed. RSVP required to get location. Climbing on your friends at the Clown Dojo! This is for all you Seattle Based Folks. In this class we will explore the basics of partner acrobatics, including counterbalances, partner rolls, stacking, pyramids, and more! We will begin with a thorough warm-up, move into basic two person tricks and pyramids and tumbling, moving partner tricks, and group movement exercises. We will also explore ways to include partner acro in your clown routines with fun exercises. The class will end in an entire class pyramid. All Levels. You do not need to bring a partner to participate in this class. Come dressed to move! 2 Sessions - April 11 10:00AM-12:30PM + 2:00-4:30PM. Photo Emulsion Screenprinting! April 18 and 19th, Smitty will be teaching a two part photoemulsion (screen burning) class. Prior experience is suggested. Possiblity of another intro class on the 17th as well for those who don't have any experience. You must sign up and pay in advance for this class as we have to buy supplies. Puppets on the loose at Earth Day! April 24th is the National Day of Puppetry and Earth Day! CoG is teaming up with City Repair and the Columbia Association of Puppeteers (CAP), a chartered guild of the Puppeteers of America, as well as SCRAP and a Master Recycler to bring National Day of Puppetry to you! We are going to have crafts for kids, mini puppet shows, and of course the CoG booth, all at the City Repair Earth Day Celebration. Queers <3 Geeks: May Day Addition! May 1st, save the date! This coming May Day we are pulling out all the stops to bring you a fabulous show that rock your world. Our talented line up is through the roof featuring CoG's Acrobats as well as Shireen Press and many more! We are also bringing you some brand new ensemble works (see above call to artist.)

CoG UPDATE:

We raised a bunch of money for hiring a lawyer and now we are waiting. The lawyer we are working with works through a non-profit which helps non-profits by reducing lawyer fees, and we are now hacking through the red tape and application process. We hope to have more info for you about this process soon.

But in the mean time we have made some commitments to some organizations in the community. We are now not only selling our wares through In Other Words we are in process of becoming fiscally sponsored by them as well. We are also meeting with Siren Nation on Friday to talk about how we can co-organize more. So exciting!!!

We are still looking for some community members who are interested in participating in a mission-ing and goals forum. If you would like to be involved send us a brief email telling us why you think you would be a good person to sit on this forum.

Also you will see we are doing more fundraisers now. This is mostly because Smitty (the person who has been funding CoG for the last two years) was laid off and we are doing fundraisers now to help pay for the studio and for entrance fees to events we do, as Smitty's unemployment barely pays for his rent. We hope in the future CoG will be more self-sustainable but any organization or business takes a while to get its feet on the ground. Currently all the money COG earns goes directly back into CoG, currently this also includes all the money from crafts and performances that Smitty and Jack do. The rest goes back to the artists we work with.

We need your help!!! It takes a lot of time to do all the work we do. So please come to our events, almost all our events are $0 + sliding scale and just having you there means so much to us. We'll love you even more if you bring a friend. But if you do have some money to chip in it is always helpful. Hello Fellow Artists,
As the Collective of Geniuses, CoG’s mission is to create art that challenges the notions on which class, gender, privilege, etc. are based. Furthermore, we empower minority artists, especially those who identify as trans, queer and/or womyn, and help them create sustainable economic stability through educational programs and creative opportunities. (*Art: Performances, events, films, videos and animation shorts, t-shirts, clothing, zines, cards, notebooks, journals, zines and chapbooks, buttons, activities and everything else that is fun.) We are mostly focusing on the trans and queer community but we believe community is more complicated than that so if you are not queer or trans identified but you are receiving this it is because you are an ally and part of our community.

This announcement is regarding our studio space (the CoG factory) at 532 SE Belmont #202. We are starting next year with a bang and a grand opening on January 30th, 2009! This day is also Lee District Last Friday Artwalk, and Jack's Birthday!

Before 2009, we plan to have in place a calendar. For each month we will feature a visual artist in the calendar and at the studio (the COG Factory). Our January opening will be a group show of all the different artists. For all of you who are performance and spoken word artists; we are offering monthly opportunities to try out new material. This is an opportunity to create a community space, it is NOT a “gig”. Our ceilings are, I think, 14 feet so you should be able to do most aerial apparatuses. We plan to get at least one mat. We have fabric, and the parts for a trapeze and plan on purchasing a hoop.

We will look to our last Friday events to find performers to slot for a quarterly event called Queers heart Geeks, which will be a “gig”. We already have scheduled the IFCC for Pride weekend late show after Key Productions (also queer) for our first show but we might change to have the show at our studio since it is so close to all the downtown nonsense and due to economic circumstances. Mostly right now I need to know if you want to perform on Jack's birthday so I can start promoting and figuring out tech.

**The fine print: Performance artists selected can pass the hat if they like but (in order to be fair to those who are participating as visual artists) they will be asked to donate 25 -60% (sliding scale) of their profit (this can exclude relevant costs), and of course they can donate more if they like. These are the same terms we are asking of the visual artists! We will also be asking for donations at the door to help defray our costs. But please remember that we are paying rent on the space and also giving our time to organize and promote these opportunities. We will be available to help the artists create other income generators, if they so desire. We are asking the same donation from all income generated through the factory.

Although we will always encourage the artists to do their own promotion, we will be promoting the openings via the calendar, our list serve and our social networking sites. We have also developed relationships with people who support our mission by help us with copy and press releases.

Our idea is that artists with more experience serve as mentors to emerging artists and as an organization, we support the artists by offering a space to create their dreams, the encouragement to make them happen and assist them with marketing, public relations, promotion and business sense that are necessary in this market.

Before 2009 we plan to have in place a calendar. For each month we will feature a visual artist in the calendar and at the studio (the CoG Factory). Our January opening will be a group show of all the different artists. We are asking the visual artists to submit a few pieces (3-5) they would like to see in the calendar and their top three choices for months, in order of preference. Submissions can be emailed to cog.pdx@gmail.com. Submissions will be accepted until slots are filled but if you can get them to us by the end of the week you will earn a gold star. Getting them in early will also benefit you for your choice placement and to insure this opportunity doesn't pass you by! To be clear: artists will be selected to be in the calendar AND to put up a gallery show for a given month.

We will be selling the calendars but at cost, as more of a promotional gimmick since we are so late in the calendar season. As the year flows by and we schedule more artists for the coming months we will update the calendar. This also means that we will be opening the space up to rental for your rehearsals and classes as well as offering classes come January such as, of course, screen printing. Furthermore, we are also setting up the painting of the walls to facilitate use for photo shots, with one side white and one side blue (it will be a sky scene but it will have lots of blue spaces that can be used like a blue screen). The idea is that through events such as the last Friday openings we can generate income to offset our costs thereby being able to offer more affordable rentals and class fees.

Thus far we have started setting up our articles of incorporation to operate as a membership based non-profit where members receive benefits such as reduced rental rates and class fees. This applies to both visual artists and performance artists. We are mostly looking for people, right now, that believe in our mission and want to be part of this community and to help us grow. For those of you who don't know; we have already received one grant and have written two more. We are fiscally sponsored which means we are borrowing another organizations non-profit status to be able to write grants, they in turn take responsibility for us spending the money. We have a business license and a Employer Identification Number. We are currently applying for a grant for the filing fees to incorporate, even if we don't receive it we plan to have the paperwork in order and file next fall anyway.

If you want to show your visual work then send me some high resolution images of your choice pieces for use in the calendar and your three top months in order of preference. If you are interested in being a part of the driving force of the organizational efforts clue me in. We especially need an accountant, a grant writer, someone who knows more than me about website and web hosting, someone who can give legal council about the articles of incorporation and an office assistant intern. We are also looking for people who are interested in and understand what it means to serve on a board of directors as we will need to have a board in order to receive 501c3 non profit status.
